California Capitol

The Renaissance Revival structure, similar to the US Capitol, was completed in 1874, after several aborted starts over 15 years. Cost: $2.5 million. The pediment, above the Corinthian columns of the west portico, contains original 1860 statues (closer view on page 1b). The cupola above the dome is topped by a gold plated copper ball. The cupola roof is also gold plated. The photo, left, looks east from Capitol Mall. Images are scanned 35mm slides.
