The Renaissance Revival structure, similar to the US Capitol, was
completed in 1874, after several aborted starts over 15 years. Cost:
$2.5 million. The pediment, above the Corinthian columns of the
west portico, contains original 1860 statues (closer view on page
1b). The cupola above the dome is topped by a gold plated copper
ball. The cupola roof is also gold plated. The photo, left, looks
