As
the Loop Road winds north toward Jordan Pond, it passes by Wildwood
Stables. This is the center of activity for a journey on the 45 miles
of carriage roads in Acadia National park and at least another dozen
miles beyond the park boundry; all the legacy of John D. Rockefeller
Jr. when the park opened in 1916. The carriages are designed to carry
many passangers, top right. These sturdy horses, right, have the day
off. Those assigned to work for the day are in a stable behind the
corral. The original stable, above, now houses a visitor center where
you can sign up for a carriage ride. All images are scanned 35mm slides. |
