Like
the eastern side, the western side of Mt Desert Island contains a
great deal of Acadia National Park acreage. The town of Tremont area
contains about 30% of parkland and Southwest Harbor about 50%. Both
town areas also have authentic working fishing villages such as Bernard
and Bass Harbor in the town of Tremont. Top left, Bernard's much photographed
Family Lighthouse and Chapel. I rode the bus almost to the end of
the line to get my version. The village of Bass Harbor extends along
the waterfront, left and above. Both views are from the Bernard side
of Bass Harbor. this is the fartherest point west that I visited.
I had planned to drive Highway 102 up the extreme west side before
leaving Mt Desert Island, but ran out of time. I was told by another
photographer that the Pretty Marsh Picnic Area was not to be missed
- I plan to return. |
