Gem Lake lies high above a spur trail, off the Caribou Lake Trail, winding west to meet the main north/south trail at North Divide Lake. The climb to Gem Lake appears as a short spur, leading northwest, halfway across the North Divide Trail. Gem Lake is mostly surrounded by forest.
