Lassen National Park West

Bumpass Hell

Look west, above; east, left; north, top left; or down at your feet. You see evidence all around you of this 16 acre geothermal - hydrothermal marvel called Bumpass Hell. Kendall Bumpass, working in the area, discovered this collection of steaming pools, fumaroles, and mud pots in the 1860's. He paid dearly for the find by sinking into a mud pot, severly burning his leg. Later, when the park was established, he was honored by having his name connected to this largest group of hydrothermal items in the park. It emits some of the hottest water in the world for this type of thermal activity - 322 degrees F. All photos in the Bumpass Hell section are scanned 35mm slides.
