Carriage Roads
These roads are open to hikers and bikers as well as the carriage traffic. Only the roads extending outside the park are closed to bicycles. Top left, a beautifully constructed granite bridge spans a creek; the view is from creek level. These briges are constructed of reinforced concrete covered with native granite facings for a natural look. The road curves over the top of the bridge, left. Rough, large, granite blocks, called coping stones, or "Rockefeller's teeth," serve as natural guardrails. The carriage way winds around a gentle rise as it leaves the Wildwood Stables, above. I hiked this section from Wildwood to Jordan Pond in hopes of meeting a horse drawn carriage - none to be seen on this foggy morn. All photos (except the one above) on this and the previous page were taken near Jordan Pond - see map. All images are scanned 35mm slides.
