One
small outbuilding stands a bit east of the larger structure remnant.
The station complex served as part of the Butterfield Overland Mail
Route. Established in 1858, it provided rest and recuperation for
horses and passengers traveling from St. Louis Missouri to Sacramento
California. This Butterfield station and local settlers requested
US troops to protect them from Mescalero Apache attacks. The station
soon moved south to gain protection from a line of forts already established.
