North Cascades
National Park
Newhalem
The Gorge Powerhouse, the first constructed, sits on the Skagit River just east of town. The left side of the plant was extended in 1949. A suspension bridge allows you to walk across the river. You can enter an observation area in the powerhouse through a back door, top right. Artifacts and photographs of the construction process are displayed. The Gorge Powerhouse helped launch a major regional power supply in the 1920's and still plays an important role for the Skagit Hydroelectric Project.
