The Juniper/Butte Lake trail climbs north, from Skag Lake, next to the Fantastic Lava Beds. It transforms into a volcanic semi desert, below, south of Cinder Cone. A grand view of the Fantastic Lava Beds and Butte Lake rewards hikers from the top of Cinder Cone, top left. You might be able to see the size of the caldera, bottom left and above, by looking at the specks on the rim. These are people. There is a trail to the bottom of the caldera. The bottom is solid volcanic material. The steep trail sections, to the top of Cinder Cone, are most difficult because of loose volcanic gravel. The trail up the back side is more gradual, so is a little easier.
