When you get to the glacier, pick a camp spot - any one of a number
of semicircular rock enclosures perched on clear spots within the
glacier. My tent, pitched to knife into the prevailing west wind,
faced the major part of the glacier and Sahale Peak, above. A wider
view, right, reveals more of the sheltering rocks. Unfortunately
the wind shifted and blew from the east after sunset. That side
of the site was open so only my gear and body weight kept the tent
from blowing away. A fire near Lake Chelan, to the east, pushes
a plume of smoke into the sky, top right. It was at the end of the
second day of burning. The fire continued for about a week. Later,
I cut my trek down the canyon short to stay out of the smoke and
fire crews.
