Most
of the snow and ice flow, from Fryingpan Glacier, receded at Panhandle
Gap. The trail became visible again at the gap, above. A toe of Fryingpan
Glacier glows through the fog at Panhandle Gap, right. The clouds
and fog lift a bit to reveal Summerland, about a mile north, top right.
I took a rest and lunch break at the Summerland shelter. I got reacquainted
with hikers I'd met several days earlier. They were traveling clockwise
on the Wonderland Trail, while I trekked counterclock wise. A group
of high school hikers and their guide filled the crowded shelter with
enthusiastic laughter as rain and snow showers pelted the shelter.
I had to pull myself away, reluctantly, from this friendly ambiance,
and head up the trail to my assigned bivouac at White River Campground.
I slogged along under intermittent rain showers to my destination. |
